Gap at it again...

By Paul Frost
The Gap
has hired three top models for their Spring 2009 campaign:

Jessica Stam, Erin Wasson and Eddie Klint

The models look stunning and very all-American but can Gap: Can you please stimulate us just a little? The Gap is one of those places we all visit but never really buy anything from. They have incredibly boring clothes but all the basic staples a boy or girl needs. Gap has the money to hire and pay the most sought after models but their ads usually still come up flat and uninspiring. Maybe I am being too hard on good old Gap because they serve their purpose. Anyone from a baby to a Grandmother can be dressed from one single store which is pretty amazing. But do you really wanna shop where you can buy something for the entire family? Didn't think so. Retailers like Gap start to remind me of A&W.. I'm over the Teen Burger.. and don't want a Grandma Burger yet.

Thoughts?

Interview - Dialogue Headwear

Glowing up the scene since 2005... Trevor Harris loves colour. If someone strolls by wearing a piece from his Dialogue line, chances are you'll notice. In a sea of gray scale and drab Ontario winter skies, Dialogue's fluorescents stand out. “Stand out” is almost an understatement. With colours like “highlighter yellow” draping the Dialogue skateboarders, snowboarders and fans, a more accurate description would be “glow-out”.

Wearing Dialogue, you'll stand out not only on the streets or slopes, but in the clubs. I saw for myself when I stared down at the dance floor at Circa on Friday night. One dancer was sporting the highlighter yellow shirt and he literally glowed.

Fashionmovementz' Jacquie Burton met with the determined young entrepreneur behind Dialogue after learning of the line at this fall's Clothing Show. Excited by his candy-coloured merch and impressed by his motivated yet humble spirit, Jacquie wanted to know more about the guy responsible for the line that seems an equivalent to the ubiquitous electro music of today.

JB: Why Dialogue?

TH: When I first started I was crocheting the hats myself. Everything was handmade, and it was literally just for my friends. I call it Dialogue because I had to have a conversation with each one of my customers to customize their hat for them. So everyone who's bought hats from me, it's been through personal communication The first two years I was doing this, everyone knew who I was because I would hand deliver hats to them so I'd always have to have a 'dialogue' with them.

JB: Who is involved with Dialogue?

TH: For the most part, I do everything myself. I print the t shirts myself, I do all the designs, I made the website myself. But there are a lot of people involved. I sponsor Skateboarders and snowboarders, which is actually a really good way to get your name out there. For the most part, I do everything myself, but my parents are also involved, they help me out a lot. They've basically allowed me to do what I need and I'm very lucky to have them.

JB: How long have you been in business?

TH: Officially, on September 15, 2005. But I started taking it really seriously in 2006.

Review: The Clothing Show

By: Jacquie Burton

As a first timer at the Toronto Clothing Show, I was excited to see the Canadian talent.

First stop was by environmentally friendly Toronto line Precocious. I chatted up owner/designer Melody Cebula who was excited to see her stuff strutted on the runway for the first time ever!
Precocious is knitwear made from reworked, recycled vintage. Every piece is hand-made and one-of-a-kind. I fell in love with the sweaters and their unique but wearable quality.

7:00pm: Before checking out the rest of the vendors, I caught the small but lively runway show set to remixed MGMT and Justice.
First to strut were Melody’s Precocious creations followed by Neveran Jean, So-Fine, The Fairies Pajamas, Playdead Cult and Avendano. The show was lively and left something to be desired.

After the show, I had to be kept on pace or I would’ve just shopped the whole time.
I met Salem at his “Hibebe Collection” booth and HAD to try these black-patent, lace-up boots that were very Givenchy.

We paroused the booths and found stand-out graphic design tees by Forty Seven and Empire and candy-coloured headwear and sweatshirts by Dialogue.

I found the sweetest jewelry I’ve seen in awhile at Love of Mine . President/buyer Anna is opening a high-end boutique in a few months. Her collection includes the cutest snake pendants and most whimsical lockets, plus designer goods!

It was a good time overall and worth checking out next year. If only for the Canadian talent!
